As the turn of the seasons approaches, many fall sports have just picked up their gear and are training to compete. However, the Crestwood varsity cross country team has been running intensively all summer and is finally ready to race.

Kate Snipas, a senior who has been running cross country for four years, is confident about this year. “I think the season will go well, we have a solid team.”

The PIAA standard for high school cross country meets is a 5k (3.1 miles) race. The courses for these races, unlike track and field, go on rough terrain which can include hills, trails through the woods, pavement, and grassy areas. The course at Crestwood has all four!

The cross country team has races every Wednesday from September 7th until October 19th at various courses. At these meets, athletes compete both individually and as a team.

In this sport, to be classified as a full team, you must have at least five or more runners.  The team score is determined by taking the finishing places of the top five athletes and adding them together. Similar to golf, the team with the lowest score wins.

Despite not having many athletes in the past, the team has acquired many new runners of all ages to race this year. Daphne Belisle, a sophomore who joined the team this year, said that she joined, “because all of my friends are here.” The team is extremely welcoming to all athletes and is often seen around the hallways of Crestwood making jokes and wearing matching shirts from the various invitationals they attend.

So far in the season, the team has participated in two invitationals, Cliff Robbins Invitational on September 3rd and an invitational in Hershey on September 24th.  At these competitions, many teams gather from all over Pennsylvania to race.
